We are fundraising to change lives!

Who we are:

Barakat focuses on educating women and children, girls in particular, in Pakistan and Afghanistan. By offering free education at our five schools and multiple literacy programs we are able to empower women and children to make a difference in their community.

Why we serve:

Studies done in 2015 found that there was an estimated 8.4 million students enrolled in primary and secondary schools, up from the estimated 1 million students in 2001. Unfortunately there's still around 3.3 million school age children, most of which are girls are still not enrolled in any level of school. When it comes to adult education only seven percent of men and only three percent of women have completed any form of education. Education has a lasting impact on girls, families, and communities around the world - girls with eight years of education are four times less likely to be married when still children; a girl who receives an extra year of secondary education can earn 20% more than others when she becomes an adult; and educated mothers are more than twice as likely to send their children to school.

What we do:

Barakat offers a different approach to women's education by offering at home literacy programs to women ages 7-75 so that they can learn to read and other basic skills so they are able to make a difference in their community. We also offer free education to children of all ages from elementary school all the way up to high school. Barakat offers an education to both boys and girls in elementary school, however we only offer high school scholarships to girls.
